Author Interview with Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckles

“NEVER, EVER lock eyes with a Night Marcher!” Everyone in Hawaii has heard this warning, except for seventeen-year-old Emma Townsend that is. For most Hawaiians know that looking into the eyes of Night Marcher can strike a curse that will end in death or eternal servitude.

Even though her father, who is a paranormal investigator, solely raised Emma, she has little experience in the realm of the supernatural. When she is forced to move with her father to Hawaii, only months before her graduation, Emma finds that her world as she knows it, is shaken when she starts seeing the unexplainable: fire balls in the distance, beating drums in the middle of nowhere and strangers who vanish into thin air. Then one day when she has a run in with a procession of Night Marchers, ancient Hawaiian spirits wandering from their burial grounds to their locations of battles past, Emma has no choice but to believe that the unbelievable does exist.

Now Emma must go on the run with the help of a mysterious stranger, as they seek out how to free Emma from the curse of a Night Marcher, who will stop at nothing to get her soul.

Night Marchers Series written by Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckels (YA Paranormal e-book)

1. What is your favorite character in your book and why is it your favorite?

"Emma, I connect with her a lot and admire her courage to face any situation." ~Rebecca

"Kaylee, she reminds me of myself a lot of the time. While we don't really get to meet her until our second book Redemption, it is worth the wait. She's witty, funny, and goes against the grain." ~Courtney

2. What would you have done differently if you were the main character of your book?

"Hmm...I don't know how to answer without spoilers. Lets go with, I would not have fallen asleep all alone by a waterfall. Nor would I have hiked to that waterfall by myself, because lets face it, I'm not an outdoorsy adventurous girl like Emma. Good thing Emma is cool like that because the story would have been boring if she just stayed in the car. :0) " ~Rebecca

"Good question! I think sometimes Emma is a little too trusting. She likes to give people the benefit of the doubt. I like to say that I myself am a bit more cautious, but I'm sure Beckie won't agree with me on that!" ~Courtney

".....No, you are not cautious Ms. Lets Go Hiking At Night with absolutely no supplies or a flashlight.... And this was only last year!" ~Rebecca

3. Do you ever have dreams about any of your characters?

"Actually no I haven't, but I've had dreams that I was writing and/or editing my book. Only on those nights where I stayed up way to late working." ~Rebecca

"For me, oh yeah! But in my dreams I take the roll of Emma in distress. While my dreams never follow the outline of the book, they can and have given me ideas for the story in and of itself." ~Courtney

4. What’s your wildest thoughts when writing this book?

"When Courtney and I have our Skype dates to plan out what's going to happen next in our books we always joke around if there's a down time in which nobody has any good ideas. We will just start blurting out random things that could happen which we would absolutely never include in the book. Like limb regeneration and random stuff that would totally not have anything to do with the storyline. It gives us a good laugh." ~Rebecca

"Alright, I'm just going to say it! I have a hard time knowing how 'far' Emma and her Beau should go in the romantic scenes. It can get pretty steamy, but Beckie is good about pulling me out of those footfalls. While we love the simple romance of the books we want to make sure it's not something you would blush at if your mother would read it (or my mother knowing I wrote some of it!)." ~Courtney

5. If things that have happened in your book happened to you what would you have done?

"I probably would have packed up and ran away back to Texas! Those Night Marchers are creepy!" ~Rebecca

"I am nosy and like to stick my head in business that doesn't involve me. I probably would have been more of a Nancy Drew and try to logically solve problems. I know I would have been searching for the books in the Menehune's library for a solution to Emma's predicament." ~Courtney

6. Did you have any kinky thoughts while writing?

"LOL! Not really since our book is Young Adult so pretty clean. I love this question though! I'm still laughing...." ~Rebecca

"See question 4 LOL!!!" ~Courtney

7. If one of your characters showed up at your door one morning what would have been your first thoughts/words to him/her?

"If Kai showed up at my door I would be like 'Dude, nice tattoo!'" ~Rebecca

"I would want to talk with Kai too. I would want to sit at his feet so he can tell me all the amazing things he has seen over the course of his 'extended' lifetime." ~Courtney

8. When writing is there anything weird you do to help you write better?

"I'm powered by Redbull and chocolate. I think both are good for the writing mind." ~Rebecca

"If I am having writers block, I pick up a good book and begin reading. There is nothing more therapeutic than delving into an author's book you admire." ~Courtney

9. Do cry when writing sad scenes?

"No, but I do make facial expressions when I write. So if it's a sad scene my face will be all frowny and my husband will have to ask me what's wrong. That and sometimes I take really deep breaths like exasperated ones and my husband once again will ask me if I'm okay. It's cute." ~Rebecca

"Yes, I do. If something happens in a character's life that I can relate to my own I often cry. Especially if it's a hard memory to relive. I know that many authors put a lot of themselves in the book, and I am guilty of it too. It helps me empathize with the characters. An example would be when we were writing Tristan's story down that he revealed to Emma by the waterfall." ~Courtney

10. How hard do you laugh when writing a funny scene?

"I don't laugh out loud as much as I just get a fun smirk on my face while writing funny scenes. I do laugh however when I read the funny scenes Courtney writes." ~Rebecca

"I laugh uncontrollably, especially when it connects with something that happened in real life. There are several scenes, that no matter how many times I re-read them, It will still crack me up!" ~Courtney

11. Any family member’s actions or descriptions ever used in any of your writings?

"I do know that when I write about Kaylee, Emma's best friend (more so in the second book REDEMPTION that's releasing next month) I often think of Courtney. It's funny too cause we kind of described Emma and Kaylee like ourselves. Emma has dark almost black hair like I do and Kaylee is a blonde with blue eyes. Also, we did put our friends names in the books here and there. My husbands name is in it but that just happened to work out on accident." ~Rebecca

"Absolutely! But if I told you who, I'd probably have to kill you though! :)." ~Courtney
